The Greatest Opening Line in History

"Call me Ishmael."

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

Those are two of the most famous opening lines in history. However, as renowned as they may be, they aren't the OG. That designation belongs to the opening line of the Bible, Genesis 1:1.

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

These ten words from Genesis 1:1 communicate at least three fundamental truths.

First, God is self-sufficient. Notice that God was already there in the beginning. He is at the head of the universe's hierarchical order. In Exodus 3:14, God told Moses, "I am who I am." Jesus said, "...before Abraham was, I am" (John 8:58). God depends on nothing. He simply exists.

Second, God created time. The Hebrew word for " in the beginning" is "bereshit." Before bereshit, there were no clocks, no calendars, and nobody judged you because you were late to the party. There was only God.

Third, God created the heavens and the earth. He is the great cosmic architect. More than that, Hebrews 1:3 says about Jesus, "...he upholds the universe by the word of his power." Not only did God create the heavens and the earth, He sustains it.

To align yourself with these biblical truths, ask yourself these three questions:

1) What does God's self-sufficiency mean for my life?
2) In what areas of my life have I deprioritized God?
3) How does Genesis 1:1 interact with The Gospel?
